AGRICULTURE
AGRICONNECT
INTRODUCTION
Agriculture is the main driver of employment and food security, as well as the primary source of income in Africa.
Yet, agricultural productivity in the region remains among the lowest in the world due, in particular, to persistent
structural constraints and heightened exposure to climate shocks.
Faced with population growth, food insecurity and climate challenges, the rapid transformation of African
agricultural systems should be a strategic priority for socioeconomic development and climate
resilience. Accordingly, on October 14, 2025, the World Bank Group launched AgriConnect, an initiative which
aims to position agriculture and agribusiness as foundational engines for job creation, economic transformation,
and global food security.
The central objective is to improve living conditions and opportunities for 300 million farmers through an
integrated approach that combines policy reforms, public and private investment, and the strengthening of
physical and digital infrastructure.
This initiative aligns with the WBG’s commitment to double its annual investments in agribusiness — reaching
US$9 billion by 2030 — and to mobilize an additional US$5 billion per year through development partners and
the private sector.
KEY AREAS OF INTERVENTION
The program’s main lines of intervention are structured around the following priorities:
Improve access to digital technology,
irrigation, roads, and skills.
Agricultural infrastructure
Harmonize regulations by simplifying standards,
redirecting subsidies, and lowering legal barriers
to economic activity.
Public policies
Provide access to financing to enable
smallholder farmers to succeed.
Mobilization of private capital
